IBS Awareness Month: Let’s Talk About It

If you’ve been told or suspect you have IBS, you’re not alone — 10–15% of the global population is estimated to live with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

And yet, it’s a condition that often gets dismissed or oversimplified. That’s why IBS Awareness Month is such a valuable time to bring attention to what really helps people find relief.

IBS Awareness Month: Understanding the Deeper Layers of IBS

What I Saw in Conventional GI Practice

During my time in a conventional GI clinic, I saw IBS patients every single day. The standard toolkit? Bentyl, fiber, maybe an SSRI.

But those treatments often fell short. It wasn’t until I returned to GI after training in nutrition, functional medicine, and integrative health that I began to dig deeper.

In the past three years, my work has gone beyond nutrition education.

There’s More to IBS Than Just Food and Bowel Movements

Because IBS isn’t just about food sensitivities or stool habits. It often overlaps with more complex gut issues — especially SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) — which requires thoughtful and nuanced treatment.

IBS Impacts More Than the Gut

Let’s be honest: bathroom issues can be embarrassing, unpredictable, and isolating.
IBS doesn’t just affect the gut — it affects confidence, social life, and emotional health.

And while fiber and medications may help a few symptoms, they don’t address the root cause.

The Overlap With SIBO

SIBO often co-exists with IBS, but it requires a totally different and more layered approach.
Not everyone with gas or bloating has SIBO — but for many, it’s a key piece of the puzzle.

The Key? Finding the root cause.

What I Talk About (A Lot!)

If you follow me on social media or podcasts, you’ve heard me talk about:

  • Gas vs. bloating vs. distention (yes, they’re different!)
  • The limits of conventional GI care
  • Why a root-cause, functional medicine approach changes lives

📌 Final Thoughts

If you’ve been told to “take some meds and fiber” and that’s it — you and I both know that’s not enough.

If you’re looking to understand what’s really going on, find relief, and rebuild your gut ecology, you know where to find me.

Let’s make this IBS Awareness Month the one where your healing journey truly begins.
